Hey everyone! I figured the best way to start out my blog would be to share a few things about myself. I feel that one of the most important things when choosing your photographer is trust. I think the best way to do that is to share some things to learn more about me.
I am a Bancroft, Ontario girl.
With the exception of 2 years when I went to college, I have lived my entire life in this small town. Although I sometimes catch myself complaining about it, I am so thankful I grew up in a small town. I love being able to get out to different cities and locations for weddings and then coming home to what I know.
I have spent more than half of my life without my mom.
I know this is a huge part of why I chose this job, and why I appreciate photography. She died when I was 10 and was a huge influence on me picking up the camera. I miss her every single day and am forever thankful for the photos I have with her and the time I did get with her.
I’ve been experimenting with cameras since I was 3.
I have attached a photo of me below with one of my first cameras. The first camera I actually remember as being MY camera was a fruit loops one out of a Kellogg’s cereal box - remember when they put toys in cereal?!
I have 3 siblings.
I am the oldest girl, and I have 2 younger sisters. Megan is 15, and Julie is 19. I also have an older brother Allen who is 23. They can drive me insane but I love them dearly and am so glad I always had someone to play with growing up. Family is everything.
I love coffee.
I used to hate the taste of it but since I was about 13, I haven’t been able to get enough. A large portion of my money goes right into my “coffee fund” which also includes iced cappuccinos and peach green tea lemonade if I happen to be at Starbucks.
I interned with Emma Haidar of Photography by Emma.
Emma is one of the kindest, most talented people I know. Part of our college course requirements was to do a placement with a professional photographer that had been in the industry at least 5 years. When I came across her website and seen her work I was absolutely blown away and had to reach out to her. I went to meet with her, showed her a few examples of my work, we chatted for a while and she decided to take me on! I had no idea at the time just how much that decision would influence where I am now. I owe so much of my knowledge to Emma. I seriously think I learned a lot more practical things with her than I did at school.
I am an Algonquin College Photography Graduate.
This is something that I am so proud of myself for doing. It’s the first time I was away from home. The first time I had to make all of the decisions for myself. I learned a lot. I made some amazing friends. I can’t sum up the experience in one small blog section but it was definitely a highlight of my life. It helped shape who I am today.
I originally wanted to focus on newborn and child portraits.
Even just before I went to college, I thought I mainly wanted to focus on newborn and child photography. I didn’t think I’d want to do too many weddings - but was I in for a shock. After shooting my first wedding as a main photographer, I was hooked! I love love. Weddings are definitely my main thing now and I am so glad I kept an open mind and put myself out there.
I am always wanting to learn more.
Photography is always changing. I like to teach myself things whenever possible. I like to watch YouTube videos of other photographers doing behind the scenes. I’m always looking at inspiration. I am always open to constructive criticism so I can improve. I just love learning about my craft.
I want to experience the world.
I don’t want to be restricted to one area doing one thing. I want to do different types of weddings. I want to experience other cultures. I want to meet people who have different ways of doing things. I have been to a few different countries and have done a few different types of weddings. I would love to expand on this.
So that’s just a bit about me. More will come later as I try to keep up with this blogging thing. Have a suggestion for a blog topic? Let me know!
Here are some throwback images of me with a camera and some more recent images. Thanks to Emma Haidar for taking the more current images while I was at placement.
These are some photos with the most important people in my life (and one more image of me that I liked). The top row middle is my immediate family and my grandparents. The photo on the top right is my boyfriend Ben & I (photo by Jordyn Gould Photography).. The bottom row includes a few images with my mom, dad and siblings.
